I would like to replace the '78 Silver Anniversary chrome emblem on the nose. The new one came with adhesive on the back. How do I remove the old one?

I am not exactly sure about the 78 emblems, but on my 72, if you open the hood and reach through the opening between the vertical hood and the nose, you should be able to reach to the location just under your emblem. There might be two (or more??) attachment nuts screwed onto studs of the emblem. Just unscrew these and the emblem will lift off.

The 78 could have used an adhesive backing straight from the factory. For those I have heard of people using hair dryers to heat up the adhesive which will allow it to be removed. Obviously this method will have to be done with care not to damage your paint.

Anyone else out there that know exactly how the 78 emblems are attached, or experienced in their removal??

Good luck!!! |thumb|

Bruce,
Mark is right on base with his description of the 78 emblems. I have bought and replaced a couple on a few 78's that I have worked on. They do have adhesive on the back side to keep them in place on top of the front nose and two studs that come through the front nose of car for nuts to fasten to . One way I was able to break the adhesive loose was to, once the nuts are removed use a straight piece of medal and lay it across the studs coming through to the inside surface of the car, and then gently tap until you see the emblem break away from hood. This might not work like Mark said according to the condition of your paint and you possibly might have to heat first.

If it is not as Mark explained then try gently prying it up. On my '77 there were no nuts on the underside holding it on. I just pryed gently until it came off. Be careful not to take any paint off with it as well. A little came off with mine so you may want to try something that can be used to help get adhesive off that is also safe for your paint.

Looks like I was a little late and wrong on that one too!! I wonder why the 77 didn't have nuts on the emblem.

Dale,
I am not too familiar with the 77 emblems but if I am not mistaken you have a set of cross flags on yours only. The 78's had cross flags and a big silver heavy chrome emblem behind them. That is probably why they decided to put studs on the 78's.

If it is held on by adhesive, DO NOT USE METAL TO PRY!!!!! Why take a chance on cracking or chipping the body? Get some fishing line about two feet long, and put it between both of your hands. Slip it behind one side of the emblem and use a swaing mition to cut through the adhesive. Guarenteed to work everytime. This is how I replaced all of the emblems on my CE
