Well, I tried the little "spring" clips and while they worked for awhile, they too have given out like the springs. That coupled with the chrome showing wear means time to replace.

I picked up a couple of GM replacements. Anyone replaced theirs? Any helpful information? hints? suggestions? special tools needed?

TIA (Thanks In Advance)

- Eric

Thanks - that helps me in getting the door panel off. If you have any other links or information on getting the outside door handles off that'd be great!

I just removed mine for a repaint . and I found it a lot easier to get the nuts off if you also take the 3 bolts out and drop the door latch assembly. This gives you a lot more room to get your hand up on there. Its still a bear to get the clips loose without dropping them down in the door.....But this will help.
I noticed a lot of different prices on door handles.Whats'the difference???Anybody Know??

I'll second that !! Also loosen the window regulator frame bolts, and the felt window anti rattle bracket and get a long needle nose pliers, so you can pull up on the linkage that goes to the door handle, I had it out and in in 20 minutes..then the door locked and it wouldn't open for notten!!! I had to pop the door with a screw driver to get it to unlock so I could reajust the door lock , and then it happen again ,the door wouldnt open.... ,3 hours later I had the door lock adjusted to the lightest pressure on the outside new door handle ! Phew !! |hammer| |cussing|.... Well here it is ,now 13 days after I replaced the handle, now the new handle is rubbing against itself on the inside !!! , This is what happens when you use the repro production handles made in Japan... PIECES OF CRAP !!!!!! |cussing| |ick|

Vette(s): 1981, Black/Black, Engine bumped to about 400HP.Ext/int mostly stock.
As mentioned above, its almost a MUST that you remove the window regulators and anti-rattle cushions so that you can roll-up the window a couple of inches further than normal. Without doing that, there just is no room to get a hand in there - and I have very small hands! If it helps, there are two regulators and two cushions at the top of each door. They also each have only one bolt holding them. You'll see the cushions, which rest against the window. The regulators are at the top of the roller track for the window. They are a metal square with a semi-circle cut out of one side, where the roller bumps into it.

Good luck. The nuts on the latches are easy to get off, but a bear to get back on. I'm guessing the suggestion to temporarily loosen and drop the latch assembly would really help.
