Hey Eric, here is maybe more than you wanted to know but it definitely answers your question...

Here is an excerpt from page 42 of the 4th edition "1970-72 Corvette Technical Information Manual & Judging Guide"
published by the National Corvette Restorers Society (NCRS)

Side Fender Grills

Grills are held in place by two chrome cross-recess head screws at the top and a hidden stud and nut at the bottom. Grills are painted off the car so the screw heads should be chrome.  Some signs of primer may be visible behind grill edges due to incomplete topcoat.  The side fender grilles for 1970 and early 1971 (someplace between s/n 1447 and 3600) show chrome edges on the horizontal surfaces only.  They did not have raised chrome bars on the vertical surfaces. Somewhere between s/n 1447 and 1600 in 1971 and throughout 1972, side grills have chrome on both the vertical and horizontal surfaces.  These grills have raised, plated bars on the vertical surfaces.  A few grills, most often on silver or gray cars, have been seen fully painted without any chrome showing. It is the responsibility of the owner to document, by original photographs, such deviations from the norm.

This guide along with great number of other very useful publications can be purchased from NCRS. There is some really great stuff there.  Check it out.

Hope this helpedSmile

And Adam please warn me if I violated any rules by posting thisEmbarrassed.  I really am not trying to advertise the NCRS here.

Eric, if you click on the picture of my car and then click to magnify, you can see that my '72 has chrome strips on both the verticals and horizontals.
