I'm trying to take down the spare tire holder. The long bolt doesn't seem to release far enough to allow the tray slot to clear the bolt. The long bolt seems "frozen" as it will only move about 1/4" Any trick to this apparatus?

Sounds like WD-40 (or some other penetrating oil) time to me. That bolt should loosen up a lot more than that.

Don't know if you ever got this, but I backoff my carrier bolt down a little then I push up on the tire carrier and slide the bolt to one side and down she comes.

Mine was in the same shape. I removed the whole bracket from the car and took this and the bolt out as a unit. There is a long cylinder shaped nut on the bolt. Some penetrating oil and direct heat to the nut finally allowed me to break mine loose. I tried wd40 while it was in the car but no luck.

Vette(s): 1982 Collector Edition, color is silver/beige.
Since we are talking about the spare tire holder, I have read a note in my 1982 GM asembly manual which states " the spare tire must be deflated when stowed in the spare tire clamshell" I am not kidding. Recently I took my spare out, cleaned it up and inflated the tire. I proceeded to stow it in the carrier and everything fits fine. The manual does not make any sense. Anyone out there have anything to add to this thought?

My 82 owner's manual says that your original or compact spare tyre should have already be inflated to 35psi inside your carrier while the stowage bolt will bottom out on bracket. A large deflated tyre will fit but the stowage bolt will not bottom out on bracket.

tried moving the bolt over to clear the slot, but it just won't move over far enough... I'll try WD40, it just might work but in this case it'll have to work a miracle! thanks

Dave, do like cdn71 said, remove the bolt assembly at the top by removing the two bolts. Will be easier to free it up off the Vette. Mike

I was able to get the long bolt to move....it's called a 1/2" drive...thanks for your help everybody...
