Picked up a towel this morning to wipe off my beautiful 78 vette black in color, to my dismay it was a towel that had dried thin set from a tile job I had done earlier this month.
Well needless to say I scratched the crap out of the back deck before I realized what had happened.
I tried to lightly compound it , but it became worse

If I were you. I would take your Vette to a local body shop and see what they say as there are several steps with different products to remove scratches and swirl marks . Nothing like a second opinon..

If you only went into the clear coat, you may be able to save it by a light wet sanding with 1000, followed by 1500 grit paper. Use soapy water to wet sand with. If your sanding water comes up black, the clear is gone. (Obviously I'm assuming it's a base clear paint).
Check your progress with a small squegee to wipe excess water off and stop sanding as soon as the scratches are gone or you get scared, whichever comes first. I wouldn't use anything more aggressive to buff with than Finesse-it, take your time and use a light touch. do only a 2 square foot area at a time.
A single stage paint can be done the same way, either way, just hope you have enough paint under the scratch.
