Okay, it's driving me nuts now.  When I make a hard stop, I get a following "clunk" somewhere in the back of the Vette.  Non-metallic, just a dull clunk.  It's like a pendulum is swinging.  Any guesses?

The first thing that came too my mind, but it seems far fetched,is the gas tank loose?the sloshing of fuel could be banging the tank around, but it's hard to believe, that both straps could be broken, but not impossible, check it out

Could it be the snubber on the front of the differential is loose or worn. Check this one out also. Not hard to replace or tighten up and could quite the "clunk".

I had another thought, how about your battery, back there in the storage compartment, maybe the hold down bolt corroded through, and the battery is loose and banging around, also your jack in the other storage compartment might be rolling around.I dont know how many compartments your 74 has,my 78 has 3 ,the drivers side for the bat ,the passenger sidefor the jack and a center small one ,I keep a couple cans of polish and a small towel in there.anything loose in those could make noise,Get back with us when you find out what it was

Vette(s): 1972 coupe/350 cid/mild cam/4 spd/20 ft. paint (looks perfect from 20 ft.), but it sure runs nice.

I'm definitely no expert, but how 'bout a loose #3 or #4 body mount on either or both sides. The forward inertia could be separating the body from the frame and settling back with a "clunk". Just another idea.....

How about the U Joint. My truck was "Clunking" after a stop and I found a bad U-Joint. It won't sound metallic because the vibration is coming through the tranny and suspension.

Well after checking out all of the above suggestions with no findings, I went for a ride with the wife and told her to turn around in her seat at best she could while I tried a few hard stops.  Told her to at least try to pinpoint a location.  The first stop she yelled that the back speaker rack was moving.  Sure enough, the previous owner installed an audio rack in the back cubby and it was pivoting back and forth giving me the "clunk".  Next is trying to figure out how they mounted this thing to begin with and then fix it.  Wedged it with a piece of foam for the time being.  Thanks for the help.
