My 1969 coupe is finally headed to paint the first of
December after almost 3 years of work. My chromer and I are confused about something and I'm hoping someone here knows the answer. Both the cowling vent piece (just ahead of the wiper door) and the Astro-Ventilation rear vents (just behind the rear window) on this car are chromed. My body man says he's never seen them chromed before, just painted the same color as the rest of the car. I find it hard to believe that someone would have had them chromed (history on this car is hard to come by). Is anyone an authority on this? Are they supposed to be chromed or painted?
Thanks in advance for your help!

They are supposed to be body color. You can purchase the chrome aftermarket, they aren't uncommon, just not "correct"

I thought they were supposed to be polished..

they are dull aluminum normally but polish to a high sheen pretty easily.

I know after-market chrome vents are available. I thought the originals were always painted to match the car.

When I purchased my 69 the wiper door and thevent grill above it were both kind of polished. Well I also didn't know what original was, so asked som equestions and looked a afew cars at shows, sure enough they were painted same color as car, including the small trim strip that goes right up next to the winsheild. I figured I would try to buff out what someone had tried to start on mine and install them, well there still on there and polished to alsmost chrome apperance. I have never really gotten any feed back positive or negative, but its a slight difference to all the originals. Also have to back astro vents in chrome which are much more available, and sold through several of the vett suppliers. You can see my wiper door and grill in the included pic.

Thanks,

Dave

Vette(s): 1960 (got wiped out in the Rapid City flood of 72), 1968 roadster(sold it so I could buy the 71), 1971 Coupe Chromed almost everything underneath. Had it since "76"
My 71 has a 73 style hood on it. One of the first things I did to it was remove the paint on the vents and polish them. I polished them to a chrome shine but then after a while they went back to a dull aluminum again. Sent them in and had them show chrome polished and they stayed bright and sharp. |thumb|

If it's not painted, Chrome it!!!
