I'm an illustrator by trade and was thinking of painting a scene under the
hood (it's just blacked-out now). I think acrylic paint will hold up to the
heat if I coat it with something (or not?). Can someone recomend a spray-
can clear coat type of protectant that can handle the high heat of the
engine?
Thanks.

I have a mural on the underside of my hood and it's done in PPG paint with clear on it. No problem with the heat, just have to watch it when the hood is open and the sun reflects off the air cleaner. That will leave a nasty burn in the paint on both sides.

If it's not painted, Chrome it!!!

what type of acrylic paint are you intending to use? im an artist
too, and ive had a little experience airbrushing signs and car
graphics. if you use the liqui-tex style waterbased acrylic paint, i
really doubt it would hold up well enough. i strongly suggest
using something like "1-shot" lettering enamel. its an oil based
enamel paint, the type pinstripers use. it is also used for
airbrushing, and sprays very well. once cured, its pretty tough,
strong enough to adhere to the uderside of your hood, and
should hold up well to the temperatures youre thinking.

you can also clear coat it with automotive clear coat, and will
hold up well. (keep in mind that clear coat will make the colors
look muted when sprayed, so go heavier than you think you
should)

1-shot is available in most art supply stores, or even eastwood
company. hope this helps

OK Reid, you're next, I'll be the guina pig!
I've had some experience with One-shot paints (painted Tanks for the
OUTLAW MC club in south Florida a LONG time ago). This time I thought
I'd do a "sable brush" acrylic job, not airbrush, with some pinstripping
around it (the pinstripping would be one-shot) but wondered if the
clearcoat would fully seal the acrylics against the heat. The acrylic part
eludes the paint pros I've talked to, they all agree, One Shot with airbrush
is the way to go. Hey, I like to buck the system. Maybe I'll do a small test
piece under my wifes Jeep Wrangler and take it for some heat producing
off roading. Only time could tell with heat, though.
Would love to see a picture of your hood painting LQQK, how much area
does it cover?
Saw several C5's with murals under the hood, some had painted the
scene on sheet metal that was mounted on the hood (is this possible on a
C3 without drilling? Doesn't look like it... any ideas on this?).
stevep316, have you tried any of this? I got the bug to paint something

Lowbrowser- i totally forgot about this. there is a specific
waterbased acrylic that is designed for custom auto painting-

Its called Createx Auto Air. its is formulated using auto-grade
pigments and is compatible with urethane clear coats like
PPG and what not. try the following links- theres alot of how
to info to help you.

(i realize youll be hand painting, but these still can be used.)

also:

and finally another brand:

al.php

im pretty sure youll find these in most well stocked art supply
shops, or just buy it online.

now i myself have never used these, but from what ive seen
these would work perfectly. this stuff has come a long way
since the 80's

Many thanks stevep316, That sounds perfect. I may even do airbrush
work with those paints, I was againt the toxic spay of one-shot, got
bleeding lungs once while doing bike tanks, so I swore the stuff off (in
spray form), also my space is small and hard to fully venilate. Thanks for
the links, I think I can make it work.
LQQK, try email:

or email from my site;
