Topic: Underhood blackout
in Forum: C3 Body
The PO of my 71 had the car painted yellow. They did an OK job but did not black out the underside of the hood and it is currently yellow too. I would like to do it myself but have not done any body painting and thought this might be a good project to learn on. How should I prep the paint thats on there so the new paint will stick? Should I use semi-gloss or satin? Don't know if the car has laquer or clearcoat or if that makes any difference. I'd like it to look "right" but not necessarily NCRS if you know what I mean.
Thanks, Neil
I would remove the hood and place it on a couple of saw horses that are wrapped in soft blankets to protect the outside finish. The I would remove all the hardware, because is most likely yellow as well. I would have them sand blasted clean or chemically stripped. Then have them replated or paint them.
Finally on the under side you will need to rough the surface with sandpaper to get the new paint to bond correctly. You will want to tap off any outside edges that you don't want to get damaged during the sanding. And lastly you would want to turn the hood over and mask off the painted surface in painters paper or newspaper to protect it from over spray. Then you can turn the hood back over prime it and paint it.
Remember once it is rough sanded to clean and wipe the surface clean before applying any paint.
I did mine with rattle can black in satin and it looks great and was much easier then getting out all of my paint equipement. This is doing it the low tech way, but it works. I'm sure others have other ways of tackling this that may be much more involved or even less envolved.

Matt, sounds like you nailed it.
Good advice. The spray cans do a good job for this type of repair. As Matt said, make sure the prep work is done. If it's not prepped right, no paint will do the job.

I know the voices aren't real, but they have some pretty cool ideas...
Does the paint need to be a high temp type? The black paint on underside of my hood has bubbles in some places. Think that was the painter or the paint, or possibly both?
The high temp paint doesn't cost any more than a good spray bomb, the bubbles were probably the application, not the product.
Just don't use the 99cent spray cans
