ConfusedConfusedConfusedBought the aluminum stock and fabricated Mike's emergency Hood release tool, tried the drivers side, no luck, went to the passenger side and after a couple of tries bingo the pass side released.  Tried the drivers side for about a hour still no luck.  While I had the tool inserted I  pulled the hood release handle under the dash I could feel it moving.  Hear is the weird part.  I started the engine and when I pushed the hood release handle in the enging would die.  I restarted the engine and played with it a little.  When I would push the handle in a little it would start to die but if I pulled the handle out it would run.  My guess is it is shorting out but I don't understand why it would'nt just die immediately instead acting like it was loosing power.
Tried the drivers side for about a hour still no luck.
Did you have the slight bend end inserted bend down? If need be, bend the end a little more but still be able to get the tool into the access hole. Don't bow it too much in the middle, you may need to reach under with a screwdriver or something to help the tool find the hole. The angle is such that the end in your hand should be almost against the fender under the hood. Here's the angle of attack:

I'm gonna go out and take a look at what might be causing the running problem cause it sure sounds weird.

Sounds like you got the hood release cable crossed up with the power supply to the distributor. I'll bet it'll become obvious when you get the hood open....

Looked at my 78SA and the hood release cable under the dash runs right next to the fuse panel. Can't see any reason it would cause the problem unless there's a bare spot somehow making contact with a wire. Once the hood is open I'd remove the underdash cable and inspect it for worn or burn spots.

Did a lot of pushing may have rubbed a bare spot on a wire.  I'll try again tonight. Had the bend down but didn't have the end that close to the hood.  I'll let you know how things go tomorrow.

Mike
Can you get me a picture of the latch from inside the firewall facing towards the front of the car, as if it was bent end of the tool?
This is the drivers side. The tool hits that tang at the bottom, pushing it down which releases the catch.

You can see the cable on the left which actually pulls the passenger side release and that linkage pulls the drivers side down.
