Vette(s): 1971 T-top. I just had car shipped from my parents house in florida where it has sat for over 12 years..It is going to be a long project!
Ben, tis is a front crossmember... I took mine off and it was very rusted as well. I wasnt ready to pay $175 for a new one so I sandblasted and soaked with rust eater and then covered with por 15. I figured it took 30+ years to get this way I could make last 5 more...I just had to many other things to replace.. If you find a cheeper one let me know too!

PS My radiator support was the same way but even bigger $$$

Ron

my radiator support is pretty solid.. but one of the "tabs" is rusted out pretty bad..

maybe i can take an upper radiator bracket cut the tab off and weld it to the rad support.

possibly next weekend Im going to see a guy who is giving me a frame..

he was going to give me one with damage.. but when i said i wanted pieces (mainly so i wouldnt have to drive 5 hours to get it).. he told me i could have a different one that was in excellent shape as he didnt feel like cutting pieces out as long as i would come and get it. Ill check out the other front crossmember and if its in good shape ill try to get him to part with it.

he sounds as if he may just throw both frames on the trailer to get them out of his way.

not promising anything but I'll see what I can do.

Be careful with these parts. I have replaced both the front crossmember and the radiator support with repo's. The front cross member was 175 new and fit pretty decent, but the radiator support is a real POS. For $300 I would expect this to fit and look better, but what can you do when it's so far gone. All of the welds are not the prettiest, and every nut had to be tapped out to make screws/bolts go in smoothly. Many extra holes and many missing holes to boot!!! If I was to do this again, I would make every effort to restore the original rad support somehow and live with it....you can get the lower supports, and clever people I am sure can fix up the remainder. My 2 cents |hammer|

My belief is that everyone sells the same part made by one supplier. I bought the support from a local vette fixer guy, basically to throw him a bone and keep him on my good side...I ask a LOT of questions along the way putting ol' Blue back together. I also seem to remember somebody telling me this during a conversation at Carlise. Probably "fits" many different years with one part...the ol' sorta good and sorta fits syndrome. Too expensive and very hard to install part. But it is in, and drilled the missing holes for the condensor, ground wire, etc and should work. |cool|
