Im thinking about getting a paint gun to paint some parts and who knows maybe car later. My question is which gun. Ive seen a lot of the HVLP guns on ebay. Is that any better than a regular high presure gravity fed gun? What are some good brands?

I got a Devilbiss Finishline II HVLP gun / kit a couple years ago with the sole purpose to paint my C3. It is doing an excellent job.

I'm not familiar with the guns they are selling on eBay. If your just looking at painting a few parts then an inexpensive gun should do you O.K.

If you're looking to paint the car you may want to spend a bit more and get a better gun.

The HVLP is the way to go if you are going to buy a good gun. It leaves more paint on the car, and creates less overspray and as a result, uses less material to do the job.

I'm with Ken on this. I used to have my own business refinishing bath tubs and used an HVLP set up exclusively. Depending on what you want to spend, there are numerous guns and HVLP sets available. I have a Wagner "Cap Spray" unit. It comes with the gun, turbine unit (it's like a vacuum cleaner motor, no need to worry about water getting into the lines) and plenty of hose. I even used this to paint my El Camino. The entire set runs about $550.00 and is available at most paint stores that cater to painting contractors. You can use it with laquers, enamels, acrylics, water and oil base materials. It comes with a #3 nozzle set up, although other sizes are available, #3 covers just about any job.

There are many good quality guns on the market, be prepared to spend a few hundred bucks though. SATA, IWATA, and Binks are some of my favorites. For misc. parts, I totally agree you should get a cheaper gun, but for the actual finish, get a good one. I've gotten to where I really like the gravity fed guns, HVLP of course. I'd be leary of buying a used gun, unless you can find one reconditioned by a shop.
