Topic: Windsheld Distortion?
in Forum: C3 Body
a long few months of body work and paint and it looks fantastic. I picked
it up from the shop yesterday morning and it drives tight and looks
amazing.
The problem I now have is, while at J&D, they accidently broke the
windsheld (don't ask)! They DID replace it but now I seem to have a slight
distortion on the curve of the drivers side. After 5 minutes on the road I
had to lean into the middle of the car to drive it, I felt like I had an eye
stigmatism! Again today I took it out and felt the same thing, though it is
subtle. My wife says she notices nothing, but she never drove it before.
My question is: Is it possible for a new replacement '72 windsheld to have
such a flaw? I know J&D will fight me on this, so I have to get my ducks in
a row before going back to them, is there a way to 'check' the amount of
distortion in a windsheld? Another hassle I don't need, but I feel it's too
dangerous to drive it like this, and I NEED to drive it, if you know what I
mean!
Any suggestions welcome. Thanks, and it is good to be back behind the
wheel and back on C3VR. I really missed the green beast AND all you
guys!!!!!!!

If you are not satisfied with the windershield THEY broke, then I would think they would replace it without a fight.(yeah, right...

If you can, have another '72 handy to compare...

WHAT?!!!
They wanted you to pay for something THEY broke?

Was the windershield part of the original estimate for repairs? If they mentioned to you that it needed to be removed for repairs, and it might break, that would be different. If not, then it's their screw-up, and they should take care of it. Otherwise, it's small-claims courtin' we will go!!

it's very ahhhh very ahhhh green
There should be absolutely no optical distortion in the windscreen unless they got a dud one. Even in vehicles like ours which have a very pronounced curve there shouldn't be any optical distortion. I have a 57 Caddy that has a wrap around windshield and you can look through all parts of it with no problems, even the piece that has the most curve in it and that's a right angle.
half circle crack at the bottom of the windshield, the Corvette place I
bought it at said it was in no danger of cracking further, and my
mechanic - who has had it on the rack dozens of times (I asked about lift
stress) also said it was in no danger of cracking further. Then It went to
J&D after the accident and THEY said it was in no danger of cracking
further, until I get a call from them saying "It cracked when we put it on
the lift, being an existing condition, we only feel it is fair you pay half". I
did pick up the car Saturday without having to pay for the windshield
replacement (I had no intention of paying for a windsheild I did not break!
so I was prepaired for a fight), and it was an easy 'no charge' deal - no
problem, which makes me wonder if they noticed the distortion and just
hoped I'd be so 'grateful' to get it for free that I wouldn't complain. It's a
long treck out to thir shop, so I need to get my proof in order before
going back because I'm sure they will say it looks fine to them. But it pulls
my left eye to drive it. Chips58 is right, I gotta dud. And a hassle I don't
need right now. Bummer ville.....

glass supplier shop and had them sign off on the distortion. Not only will
they supply new glass (if the distortion checks out), but they will install it.
this is going MUCH smoother than I thought it would be given the original
attitude about the broken WS responsibility.... now I hope the guy at the
glass shop sees the left eye pull like I do....

I'll agree that previous damage might come into play, but, it's been on lifts before, and didn't break. It broke because maybe they didn't have the lift arms properly placed. In all my years of runnin cars up & down on lifts, I've never seen a windershield break...ever.
I had a big fight with a tow driver last year about the targa top on my '85. Goober insisted that I take the top off, or he would not be responsible if if "flew off going down the road"!

Ya jest cain't get good help no mo!

Good luck on your deal, tho!

Just an afterthought...was there any frame damage to your car in the wreck? If they had to "pull" the frame, that could very well break the glass. But...we won't tell them, eh?

A happy customer will come back and recommend it to friends.
A pissed off customer will tell everyone.
Let us know the final solution.
