I cracked the windshield and have a leak around my rear window. The assembly manual shows a rubber water dam for both pieces of glass. The glass shops I have talked to don't know and I have not been able to locate them from any suppliers. Does anyone know if these are truly needed? If so, where can they be purchased? Can these windows be sealed with just the materials an auto glass shop normaly stocks? Thanks, Ray

The rear window on my '75 was only hanging in by the top when I got it ,so a local smash repairer stuck it back in using a standard windscreen seal;the type you cut to size and then melt on using a 12 volt battery, about $20,00 worth. In a couple of spots where it dipped a bit I used some black caulking compound to bring it up to deck level. I also used this compound to fill in a couple of inconsistencies in my door/T-top panels. It may not be up to NCRS standard , but it keeps the wind and water out. |thumb|

I'm assuming that you are talking about your '78.

The windshield and rear window are bonded in using what your glass shop uses for typical glass installations. Which I believe it is some type of urethane adhesive. There are no rubber pieces. I had my windshield replaced on my '81 (75-82 are the same). They cut the old glass out, cleaned out the channel/frame, laid new adhesive in, set the glass in and pressed on it for awhile...done.
Just leave one of the windows cracked down slightly so air pressure from closing the door don't push out the glass. Only for a day.

Butyl was the original type of sealer for the windsheild. Newer cars use urathane. The urathane can also be used on our cars.
