Got it in. Used butyl and all seems to have gone well. The WS itself is very nice from Pilkingtons. Date code is exact match of original. ASI mark is alittle smudged but is in the right place and right color.
Some things to consider-
Butyl and I believe urethane requires the proper primer be used underneath it before install. This stuff is a little hard to find on short notice but you dont need very much. I bought about 2 ounces from a glass shop locally and that was enough. I bought the butyl from NAPA ($14).
The top corner trim pieces are held in by 2 screws in the back and 2 in the front. You cannot acces the 2 forward screws after the WS is in place so make sure you put the corner trim on BEFORE you install the WS. I ran safety wire thru the 2 forward holes instead of using screws so that I can remove these pieces if necessary without removing the WS first, and it is covered by the forward trim strip.
You can put the butyl or urethane on the WS or on the frame, your choice. It needs to go on the outside edge of the WS or the inner edge of the pinchweld, not away from the glass edge or on the outside of the pinchweld (frame). If you do the latter there is a good chance the new WS will miss touching the butyl or the butyl will miss the frame. Make sure to dry fit before glueing.
I put the butyl on the pinchweld and left the wax paper on, then laid the WS on top of the paper in order to be able to move it if necessary, then stripped out the paper from under the WS.
As far as the WS frame, I wire wheeled off the surface rust and coated it with Eastwood Rust Encapsulator. Then I coated the upper frame cross section with lithium grease fpr extra protection.
When reinstalling the frame trim pieces be sure to squeeze the angle tighter on the inner side pieces and the top strip before install so the forward edge of each pieces rests tightly against the WS.
This was a large project for me but it seems to have come out nicely. I would recommend Pilkingtons to anyone looking for a correct dated WS. They were good to deal with and I thought prices were quite fair. I still wish I had not broken the original but at least this one doesnt have all the stone chips.
Leaving for Bloomington Friday.
Thanks to all with suggestions and help.
Neil
Did you need two people to place the glass in the frame?
