Has anybody ever had a repair done to their window glass?  I got a small (about 1" long) crack in my front windshield somehow over the summer and was considering having the "Safelite" people fix it this fall.  I'm concerned about the quality of the repair, of course.

Out of curiosity, has anybody ever had an entire Corvette windshield replaced by one of those "chain" companies?

had windshields on two vehicles replaced at different times and by different companies. came right to my job and did it there and did a great job. guess it's like anything and you hope that the guy installing it isn't having a bad day.

You should replace the windshield in my opinion. The vacuum repair does okay with chips and star cracks but usually if the crack is linear  and longer that 1/2 inch, the material does not flow properly.

Does your insurance cover glass replacement?
Are you concerned with originality?
There are companies that have vintage (the correct brand and number)windsheilds.

Having it replaced also gives you a chance to check out the condition of the frame. Have them come to your house and make sure you are there. If the frame has any rust, fix it before you let them put the glass back in.

Thanks for all the advice.  It probably wouldn't hurt to see if the crack can just be repaired before I go replacing the windshield (it actually starts as a very small chip, probably from a piece of debris that hit the glass).  I got a quote of about $60 for repair.
I don't suspect any rust, but it would be nice to know for certain.  Originality is not a big concern for me, and I'll be paying out of pocket.

Had the windshield repaired today.  Service tech came right out to the house.  Very happy with the repair, it's hardly noticeable if you don't know where to look.  Only $63; plus, if the repair fails down the line, they will credit that cost toward a replacement windshield.  Really a win-win situation  Smile
