OK, so I'm looking for something to do while waiting on the engine to return from the machine shop, I decided to replace the door seals and the windshield and window rear seal on the door pillar.

Everything is going fine with the door seals and we figured out how to drill out the rivets on the door pillar.  Then I remove the passenger side windshield reveal seal with no problems.  The 3 screws come out easy and after cleanup, it goes back together quite easily.

Now it is time for the drivers side windshield reveal seal.  I pulled the three screws with no problem.  Then, while trying to remove the seal enclosure, the whole bloody thing, reveal seal, reveal and the piece that covers the windshield side comes off in my hand.  Beside the windshield, in the valley, I find 3 or 4 chunks of stuff that is very hard and very loose.

Can anyone tell me what type sealant I need to use in this valley and if it would be wise to go ahead and try to remove the passenger side piece and seal it as well?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Dennis

Never Mind.

I found 3-M Part Number 8578 Strip Calk is the stuff.  Cheap too!

Dennis, to seal around the window, get a tube of 3M "Window Weld"(Super Fast Urethane), PT# 51135-08609
This is the real deal! A urethane sealer will not "trap" water around the window, it will repell it. It is what most all of the glass people use, and is what is reccommended to be used for installin the front/rear glass on Corvettes. It's easy to work with, and it will be there a LONG time, unlike a silicon product.

Dennis,

Are you trying to seal the trim pieces that are 2 part and attach to the windshield pillar and have a piece of weatherstrip in it?. They are adjustable for your side windows to seal against. If so I use the 3M rope calk also... it will never harden and can be easily re-moved again.

I'm trying to put the two piece trim piece back on the windshield.  There is a finger size gap between the windshield and the upper pillar that had some hard, dried out chunks in it.

I've cleaned out the channel beside the windshield and didn't know what the filler was to replace it.  I came up with the Strip Calk P/N from the local Vette mechanic.  That is what they use.

Sounds like a combo of the rope calk and the window weld might be the way to go.

Do you put the rope in at the lower edge of the glass, then put the window weld over it?

Normally, the rope seal/strip caulk is used under the glass, to hold it off of the steel, and then the urethane sealant is skwerted around that. If the glass is still in the frame, as I assume it is, I would put a bead of the sealant around the glass first, then the rope seal, and then smooth the urethane over the rope seal. If you just put the strip-caulk in the gap(and then sealant), you're not really gonna seal anything. Might as well make a good seal, while yer doing it.
