There are two types of buffers on the market. A random orbital buffer for light compounding and waxing, or a high speed buffer for more serious paint problems. If you have no experience with these machines I suggest that you start with the orbital as there is less chance that you can damage your paint. A high speed machine takes a little practice and if not handled right you can burn your paint. If you need serious buffing I suggest that you take it to reputable detail shop then you should be able to maintain the finish by hand or with the orbital machine. If you do get a high speed machine, don't go over 1800 rpm and try to use a foam pad if you can. Check with your local detail supplier for these. Let me know if I can help further.

The one sure thing I know is FOAM PADS, once you use these babys you'll never use anything again!!!!!!! But also like he said if your using the regular buffer, tkae it easy...........
Not as much to worry about with the random orbitals, there pretty harmless,
