The 1 or single stage paints contain urethane and don't require a clear coat finish. They're cheaper and often do not result in a nice finish worthy of a Corvette.

When I had my 1976 painted they used a PPG brand with a three stage process. I took it one step further and added a single stage gel coat. This coat fills in the imperfections in the fiberglass for a smooth glass finish, then the under, base and then the clear coat. I'm so pleased with the car's paint. It was well worth the price and has given me miles of thumbs up when on the road to a C3VR gathering, no matter what part of the country it's held..Terry

Whether you go with single stage or two stage, depending on the painter, you can cut and polish both types to make a great finish. The cost of painting will vary depending on the prep amount of work...don't cheap out on the preperation, because no matter what paint is used you will end up with sand scratches, paint sinkage, or worse paint blisters, especially on the bumpers, proper build primers and value shade primers are a must. Corvette painting is not like painting steel cars, Vettes have a lot more waves in the body to be blocked out before final paint...best to get someone in your area that is familiar with painting fiberglass. Determine up front with him what you want your final paint to look like, daily driver, street show or only show. Ask if cuts and buffs paint nibs and dust out if there is any in the finish paint job and is that include in the price....and HOW long will it take him to do the job...shop around and don't think that the cheap price is best. Get it ALL in writing!!!!
