I've got a new pair of rocker panels that have been stored for quite some time, still in the GM wrapper. the problem is removing the paper left an impression in places on the panel. I think these panel have a protective coating on them, so I need to know whats the best way to clean and polish them without damaging the protective coating. 

Are you able to post a picture of what exactly you are talking about?

I think they are made out of aluminum, don't think there is a protective coating on them. 

You are talking about the bright aluminum strips between the wheel wells under the door, right?

Looks to me to be a film left by plastic during storage/shipment/heat. I would think if you tried OOOO steel wool lightly it would remove the film, and not damage the surface. Be careful of black areas, as that will come off also. I myself have buffed many aluminum surfaces with it and no problems.

I was thinking steel wool too.  Or maybe alcohol or mineral spirits.  Or even Goo B Gone/ WD40.

another thought, have them powder coated.  I know they are new but the process will get all the glue/film off and they will withstand scratching/chipping.  About 15 years ago I had my 82 panels done and they still look new.

78-82 rocker panels were all black.  Before that they were shiney aluminum. We don't know what year his Corvette is but those are 68-77 rocker panels in his photo.

does anybody now where to get these aluminum rocker panels for a 1981?   ive looked in all the usual places

Zip and Corvette Pacifica (now Top Flight) have them.  What is the difference between them and the 78-79 or the 68-77 (if you powder coated them black)?
