Vette(s): Gone, but not forgotten: 1974 Coupe Red, matching numbers, Black Interior, L-48 w/ 4 speed; The “Admiral”, also gone and never to be forgotten. 1994 Admiral Blue LT-1 coupe, Black Interior Automatic

Living in Minnesota means that I can only enjoy my '74 Corvette for 6 months of the year. For the remaining 6 months, the car must hibernate away from snow, ice and dreaded road salt! Censored There seems to be no concensus amongst the car people I know as to how to properly prepare a car for storage. Based on past experience, I intend to store the car in an unheated pole barn with a dirt floor. The car will be covered and a tarp will be underneath the car. The gas will be treated with Sta-bil and the tank filled. The oil will be changed prior to storing the car and the battery will be removed. Fabric softener sheets will be placed in the interior to discourage mice.

Did I miss anything?Question

Vette(s): 74 coupe 4 speed 350, 54K actual miles, all original; paint, interior, engine, split bumper. #'s match. 2nd owner, no stress cracks.
I recieved my packet of "free stuff from GM" for my C3 as a result of another thread.  In the information was a sheet titled "Extended Storage beyond 30 days".
                    I found the following interesting:Tongue

"After the engine oil has been replaced, remove the air cleaner and pour 1/2 to 1 pint of 10W or lighter oil into the carberator intake with the engine running.  Pour slowly at first, then rapidly using the last quarter to stall the engine.  Repalce the air cleaner."

This would coat the inside of the engine of a light coat of oil.

For the "free stuff" call 1 800 222-1020, for lots more info....
Really worth getting.

don't know if this is true or not,  but I've heard if you put a large enough sheet of plywood under your car  (pretty much enough to cover the wheelbase), it will help absorb the moisture from the dirt floor.

It sounds like it makes sense and I think it would help (along with the tarp).

oh, and don't forget to sprinkle moth balls around to discourage mice from getting into your exhaust and making nests in your mufflers.

Actually, the best surface to store a car on IS dirt, bacause it will absorb the moisture, rather than just trap it like concrete. How often do you see a wet floor under a car and the undercarriage dripping wet in the early spring when the air is damp. With my concrete floor I put several 2X4s underneath the tarp to create an air space between the moisture attracting concrete and the car.

Thanks for the advice. Stalling the engine with oil seems rather odd as one would think it would really mess up the spark plugs.  I had not thought of moth balls to keep rodents out of the exhaust system. I have used Bounce sheets for years as a rodent repellant in my pop up camper.

They sell  fogging oil in a spray can. I spray it in my boat carb when I winterize it. Blows out in the spring and she runs fine.

I liked the part about mice in the exhaust. Matter of fact, Just a couple of weeks ago, I fired up My Goldwing, and a bunch of stuff came flying out the exhaust. WHen I was done with my ride that day, I put the bike back, and set a trap at the kickstand. I never did catch a mouse. I guess I made'm mad and he left, or, he was smoked .

SOLD - "The Toy" - '70 Convertible

"BLUBYU" - '04 Coupe
There are several threads around that discuss long term storage and have lots of good info in them.

For several years I stored "The Toy" in an unheated, concrete/dirt floor storage facility and I always laid down a sheet of plastic as a vapor barrier under the car.  I still lay down a sheet of plastic on the concrete floor out of habit.

I also pump up the tires to 50 PSI to help reduce any flat spotting.  Topping the brake fluid is a good thing to do also.  Most C3 brakes will lose some brake fluid over the storage period.  Then in the spring I bleed the system to make sure I have clean fluid and a solid pedal.

Hadn't thought about the carb fogging before but that makes sense if you're not going to be running it at all.  Now that all the toys winter at "The Ranch" they get run at least once a month so I don't worry about that.

Enjoy the rest of the driving season...!!!

Good advice. I also have a piece of plywood  14 x 20 under each tire. This will keep the concrete temp insulated from the rubber. Thumbs%20Up
