I just tried Rain-X for the first time and I have to say in contradiction to others, it was a "life saver".
Before I used Rain-X my wipers were "chattering" across the windshield. Not only did they not clear the window and make a lot of noise, but they would bang into one another in the middle and occasionally lock up. I would have to pull over to the side of the road, get out and unlock them.
This went on a couple of times until one time they met, locked and then one of them bent the other blade right off!
I had ironically just bought some Rain-X but hadn't put it on and it was in the back of the car. I pulled into a garage and applied it. Drove the rest of the way home - including highway driving - never had to turn the wipers on!
There is a lot of beading when going slower - I'll agree with that. But once I hit the highway it just blew off.
I can't say anything in terms of "long term usage" but it got me home that day and I was very impressed that it worked as stated.
