To make sure what my engine temp was I replaced my thermostat housing with one with a single 1/4" pipe thread hole in the top, went to the hot boat shop and bought a 1" moon oil filled temp gauge, just fits under the stock air cleaner, looks clean, the moon 1-3/4"-2" won't fit under the air cleaner, the boat guys use these gauges to check their head temps.

Just went out and doubled checked the sizes of the Moon oil filled screw in temp gauages, made a mistake, the size that DOES fit is 1-1/2", the one that DOESN,T fit is 2-1/4",sorry!

Just remember, head temp, coolant temp, block temp, and oil temp can and do vary greatly. It would be normal for none of these to match. Using one to judge another could be a mistake.

Hey Ken, I think you read my post incorrectley, these Moon gauages are "oil filled" coolant temp gauages so the needle doesn't vibrate, weather you put them in the water passages of the head or in the thermostate housing they will give you the coolant temp of that perticular area, I put it in the thermo housing because you would think that its there where the coolant is the hottest before it enters the radiator, as far as hot spots in your engine, which most likely there are, oh well

I did read it right. Sorry if I was confusing. I know you were not referring to oil temp. That was just to illustrate my point, which is measuring at the hose, or head, or block, or manifold will all be a bit different. And the coolant in the head will not be the same temp as the head itself. So you don't want to compare hose temp to calibrate the gauge. It would be much closer than nothing, but not dead on.

The most accurate way is to remove the sensor from the car. Place it in boiling hot water, and measure the water temp. Be sure to give the sensor time to equalize temp. You will need to run a ground wire from the sensor to the engine, as well as connect the sensor wire. Then observe the gauge. This may be too picky, and more trouble than it's worth. But accurate at that temp. The instructor in me strikes again. Sometimes I get carried away.

Many race cars and a few new cars do use oil temp gauges/sensors. Some new cars use head temp sensors, in addtion to coolant temp sensors. And the use of the extra Moon guages is quite good.
