Tough question. There are some very good aftermarket A/C units out there. And like any thing there is junk. The installer is also very key in the final product.
When checking the systems there are a couple of things to look for.
First, how long has the company been around? Are parts going to be available? How compatable are they with other parts in that becomes an issue? This includes under the hood, under the dash, electrical, controls etc.
Second, Just how good does it fit the car? Look at som other installs and see how the fit and look in the car. Sloppy? Cheap looking vents, switches, etc? How much of the car needs modified to install it?
I know that's a lot of questions, but the best I can say is start shopping. Good luck.

You are in the quandry that I was up until a month ago. Basically here is what I found out.
The Corvette Clinic makes a kit that will replace the old AC compressor with a new one. Corvette Central sells this kit. Its the AC Compressor Brackets and will eliminator the POA valve assembly and evaporator.
Hot Rod air sells a kit, but you will have give up some originality on your corvette as it mounts under the dash and eliminates the Evaporator, heater core and and blower box on the engine side of the car. It also replaces the original AC Harness. They have an adapter kit that will allow you to keep your factory controls.
Classic Auto Air also has a kit just like the Hot Rod air kit.
I've also heard that Classic Auto Air can do a rebuild on our old compressor and add all new updated inernals to make them more effiecent and current gas compaitable.
Both the Hot Rod air kits and Classic kits have very good warranties. (Note the warranty has conditiions)
I have been at study about this as only 50% of my AC system was still with my C3. The cost to replace the factory system is more expensive then these new systems.
The factory system was good at best. Things that go wrong with the factory system were Heat core leaks, loose duct work leading to leaks under the dash, vaccum doors cracking and not sealing properly and heat coming through system from engine compart due to bad sealing. These systems are designed to fix all that, so I'm not sold on going back to a factory system, just to be plagued by these issues.
So these are things you need to think about, just as I am.

I went with Hot Rod air because they had a kit specifically designed to fit my 74. I won't know how well it works till I get the car back.
I ordered the Hot Rod Air kit almost two years ago & installed it then. I,ve had no problems with it and it keeps my 68 convertible cool on the hottest days. I bought it mostly to keep my feet cool as the big block really puts out the heat. The install wasn't hard...just have to take your time and follow the directions. They also answer the phone and will answer your questions. When I bought it they were the only after market air for a 68. Almost forgot the heater works good too.
Good luck,
Alan
