Topic: Compressor Help
in Forum: C3 Cooling and Heating Systems
I am replacing the compressor on my 76 Vette and each time one arrives the electrical connections is in the wrong place looking from the front with the bulbous part at the bottom my old compressor has the electrical connection at 10 o'clock, but every new one (3 so far) has had the connection at 2 o'clock can anyone tell me if this is the way they all come and the only way to fix it is to go to an A/C shop and get them to turn it to the 10 o'clock position.
Thanks

You have two choices: (1)Get the "correct" compressor,

I'm not sure, but it is possible that there is also different magnet assemblies, that would have the "pin" in a diff. location, thereby aligning the magnet in a diff. position. Anyone confirm(or deny) this?

Guys thanks for the responses, my compressor is on the passanger side so maybe they are sending the wrong one, also it is a re-built unit so maybe it's just as well is doesn't fit i am in the process of returning it to the seller.
Has anyone out there purchased a compressor like mine with the connector at the 10 o'clock position and if so where did you get it, i was going to try Ecklers as they have always been good in the past but i am concerned they will also send the wrong one.

I recently changed mine and found the electrical prong in a different position then my original. I too exchanged it and recieved exactly the same thing. Much to my surprise I found I was trying to install the front mounting bracket on the same side as the prong which wasnt correct.
Joel is correct about realigning the clutch magnet. It may actually require a different magnet. You might not have choice for the alignment. If you have choices, the rotation will work. You need to remove the clutch plate and pulley to move the magnet position. Clutch plate clearance is critical when reinstalling the plate.
The compressor sounds more like an A6 than a R4. The R4 is short and evenly round. The A6 is longer and shaped more like a pop can. It does have the raised area on the bottom, which is an oil reserve, and MUST be toward the bottom.

Thanks to all you guys for your responses, i have yet again proved you can't trust any mechanic (sorry to any mechanics out there but i have yet to find a good one), I do all the work on my own cars but when it came to the A/C I believed you needed special tools etc(still not sure on that one) therefore I took it to a garage to be fixed and he is the one who told me the compressor could not be fitted as the connection fouled the bracket, and although I had the doubt in the back of my mind I stupidly believed him, then when MrMako replied to my post i thought i would check for myself and what a surprise the "Master Mechanic" was trying to mount the compressor on the wrong side of the bracket, thank you Mr Mako for making me go and check.
As i have already paid this guy i shall go back show him the error of his ways and make him fix the rest 'Free'.
I grant you the electrical connections are in the wrong position, but the wires reach and it will work.
Once again thanks to all of you who responded especially Mr Mako.
