Hi,

Can anyone tell me what the correct v-belt is for my 1974 L82 Corvette w/o power steering, air pump and a/c is? The belt goes from the crank pulley to the water pump only. I cannot find a listing for this v-belt anywhere.

Greg

Vette(s): 1972 conv, 4-speed, 350, 200hp, numbers match, rally wheels, war bonnett yellow w/white top. good condition, nice driver.

Greetings, What is running the alternator? How are you tightening the belt? Sounds to me you don't have the correct one.  Parts stores should be able to get the correct one.

The alternator is run by a separate belt which is adjustable. The one I'm referring to runs from the crank pulley to the water pump as a idler with no way to make an adjustment.

The number on the old belt cross reference to Gates #7325 which is way to loose compared to the old one and the #7320 is way to tight, you can't get it on.

This makes no sense, how do you tighten the water pump belt?  In this diagram it looks like it is tightened by the the air pump.

Sorry, this antiquated website doesn't let us upload a pic from the internet apparently.

If it is an automatic trans, it does not have the smog pump. Like the others say tho, you cannot have a belt that ONLY goes from the crank to the wp....it would be useless. I'll check the assembly manual for the correct belt routing, and the OE part #. Might be tomorrow before I get a chance tho...

On certain 427's and 454's they have the same setup as mine with the belt only going from the crank to the water pump.

They use GM #3952336 belt. That belt is too small for my application.

How do you install a belt on a mid 70's that only goes from the crank to the water pump?  They don't move.

Assy manual DOES show a single belt from crank to w/p pulley. Never seen one set up like this. The only way to change it would be to remove the fan and pulley. I have to assume it was an "emergency" type deal in case the alt belt broke/failed. Ignore the smog pump in the drawing...the legend calls out "belt w/pump (exc C60 or N41).

Yes, that to replace the belt you need to remove the pulley, install the belt on the pulley and reinstall both to the engine together. The assembly book for 1974 shows it that way on a vin "y" (454) motor. I may be dating myself but many vehicles had a set up like this in my youth. I have tried all the regular providers and found a gap for the 1974 year belts so I went online and found a place, VBelt Supply.com. They have many different size belts listed, I ordered 6 different belts from them and I'll see if any of them will fit. Check them out their prices are not bad.

Thanks for the replies,

Greg

The pic above is directly from the '74 Assembly Instruction Manual, for L48 and L82 engines. THE OE part # is 3935420, which is still available from several sources.

PARAGON CORVETTE shows it for $28.  Quanta Products has correct part #, dated belt for $26, if you are going for Judging points.
