I am cleaning and resealing all the components of my duct system.  When I reached the defrost vent connection there is about a 1/2 inch gap between the defrost vent connection and the controler portion of the heater box. Both pieces are secured. No way to connect them they just line up with each other. I know this is the way it came from the factory.
Is this correct or do I have a piece missing???  Im fabriating a piece to close the gap but would like to know if for some reason they aren't supposed to connect completely.

I've got 2 '78s but haven't paid any attention to that area yet. but I'm goin with you're gut feeling 'cause any gap in that ducting can't be correct. Obviously less efficient defrost.

To late for a pic.  I dont have that much patients. I fabricated a thin piece of plastic, foam insulation and pop rivits.  Im glad some else saw what I saw though and I hope the gap wasnt there for a reason.

Don't make me swear to this.  I could be wrong.   I think there was a very thick piece of foam stuck to one part with adhesive.   I believe it was done that way for assembly ease.

My somewhat fuzzy rememories agree with Ken's...matter of fact, Imma thinking a 1/2" gap is prolly closer than normal!! I've seen some of the ductwork up there with gaps large enough to stick yer hand in.
All that being said, an AIM manual would be the best way to find out for sure if there was a foam seal there...anyone got a '78 AIM they care to look in? Anyone? Anyone?? Bueller?   Bueller?

No gap in the AIM. Nor foam. Looks like they just fit together. mkapp78792008-09-05 20:16:48

I believe the foam was attached to the part as new, so no separate parts listing.

It does show foam seals on the other duct connections, but only like a gasket within the slip joint. Nothing very large to bridge a gap. mkapp78792008-09-05 20:45:10

Mine was just a gap. No evidence of any foam or adheisive
