Vette(s): 1969 Corvette Stingray Convertible. Just bought it from my uncle who owned it since 1971. Fathom green, green interior. 350/300, T400.
Still trying to work the bugs out of the new engine (30 miles on it so far). I put a new temp gauge in during the rebuild with a new calibrated sender. The engine is running around 225 degrees in town (weather in the 70's here). The mechanic installed a 195 degree thermostat. What's itr supposed to have? Would a 160 degree thermostat make a difference? I'm worried that with it running this hot now, what'll it be like next summer when the weather's in the 90's?
Thanks,
Matt

Hi Matt
The thermostat only regulates minimun operating temperature.Make sure the fan is working (clutch fan?)
and the radiator is good.If the new engine is more powerful than stock than you may need more cooling capacity.Good luck with the new engine!

It may run a bit cooler after it's broken in. It may not. Keep an eye on it so it does not overheat, and drive it a while. A cooler stat won't help. But as already metioned, perhaps some cooling system upgrades.

The only thing non-stock in the engine is the cam (Crane 272 H10). The radiator was just recored too.

Thanks,
Matt

it will run hotter during break-in period..

use some water wetter in the coolant to help offset this..

Thanks Guys. I think the temp gauge or sender may be off. The mechanic used a laser temp thingamabob, it read 210 at the water neck.

the temp at the neck and the temp in the head may be different by that much...
