Vette(s): 1970 corvette conv, 350 auto.

Hello, I am new here so please bere with me, and I am not very computer savy either. I just bought a vette, after looking at many...it is a 1970 conv. auto tranny. VERY clean and straight frame, wich is the main reason I ended up with this one. I have been looking around under the hood, trying to familiarize myself with things and I noticed today there is no coolant overflow bottle.....the hose just exits down the side of the radiator. I have been driving it a bit and never seamed to go over 180 or so, and seams to run OK, No coolent leaks or steaming. Is this safe to run this way? or am I asking for a big problem. Thanks Much!  e.m.

Not all cars had a recovery system in the early days. If yours is a base engine(lower HP), it may not have had one to start with. Does it have A/C? It never hurts to have a recovery bottle...just piece of mind, if nothing else!

Welcome to C3VR, btw!!

I would suggest adding a tank, weather it is just a catch can or an actual recovery system, just to keep coolent of the ground.  It is dangerous for pets and can be messy.  I added one to my car, less then 50 dollars in parts.

My 72 with auto/ AC does not have a recovery tank, I was told they have a larger core radiator. Mine will puke out extra water but then it stays pretty much at the same level.

On my 71, base 350, 4 speed, and no AC, I have an expansion tank (and aluminum radiator).

OK GUYS, Thanks very much for the info, I guess because there are others out there with the same set up, I am not going to worry about not having a expansion tank too much. As suggested, I may verry well add a tank of some sort, especially if I notice it spitting out coolantSmile
