I have been looking at my radiator expansion tank for my 1972 454. There is nothing wrong with it, but it does not seem to match up with all the expansion tanks being sold in Ecklers, Mid America and other corvette vendors. The ones I have seen in the convette vendor catalogs are all aluminum and are rounded on the end with the radiator cap sitting on top of the tank. Mine is a black painted brass tank, mostly flat on the end with a goose neck coming out of the end that the radiator cap sits on. My tank is about 14" long and almost 4" in diameter The tag on the tank reads like this: Harrison, Lockport N.Y., 72D, and with the number at the bottom of the plate reading 3019249. The tank appears to be original equipment with the car, but now I am not sure. If anybody could help with this, I sure would appreciate it. Thanks, Jimmie |sad|

Thanks JW, I didn't think I would ever get a reply on my posting. If yours is the same as mine, it must be the original expansion tank. I hope it is anyway.

Jimmy,

Does your car have a/c?

My 71 454 has a/c and has the same expansion tank.

It sounds like the same type of tank I have on my 1972 454 (with A/C and 4-speed).

Tom, My car does have A/C. Reading the other replys, it does seem that this is the orginal expansion tank that came with the car. It appears that BB corvettes with A/C has this type of expansion. Thanks to all for their replies. Jimmie

That long tank is reqd with 69-72 big-block with air. After that they just had a standard radiator with a cap and a plastic overflow tank.
