Tried to get a fan clutch today. MAM, Ecklers and The Last Detail techs all said the '71 was unique and none of them have or can get it. Something about the bolt pattern was different. Ecklers recommended getting a 'universal' type from a local parts house with the slotted type holes. Why would '71 be different from '70 or '72Question  Would I be likely encounter balance problems with the slotted type? Anyone with a '71 ever run in to this before Question Confused help me, help me! Wits%20End

Should'nt be any problem with the slotted one,as long as the center hole is the same size as your water pump shaft Thumbs%20Up

Rick's has the clutch for the 71. According to them  71 thru 73 is the same.

There is a difference in the type of clutch only. They will bolt on, as long as the wp shaft size is the same as the clutch. Chances are, you don't have the original water pump on yer car anyway. I would measure the shaft size, and maybe the bolt circle, and see what will fit. Most wp shafts are 5/8" or 3/4" but some are a bit smaller. Maybe they thought you were looking for a "stock/original" fan clutch?
Ron is right, tho. If the pump shaft and the clutch center is the same size, the slotted bolt-hole type will work fine. It's the shaft it centers on anyway, not the bolts.
