Vette(s): 1972 coupe/350 cid/mild cam/4 spd/20 ft. paint (looks perfect from 20 ft.), but it sure runs nice.
My fan shroud has definitely seen better days. Engine bays with the shroud removed have a cleaner look, not to mention all the extra room to work in. My question: Is the fan shroud an absolute necessity or is it more of a safety item (safeguard hands and long hair |biggrin| ). Thanks.

The shroud is an absolute necessity in a Corvette, particularly a big block. It's a critical piece of the cooling system. If it needs replaced, do so.

Thanks for the prompt reply, Gun. It's a smallblock soon to be modified, including a higher capacity radiator. Oh, well, one more thing for the wish list.

Vette(s): Just finished 2 years of Blood, Sweat, & Tears restoring my 69 Coupe. Crimsom Red, 427, vacuum removed, Shot of Steeroids, Killer Lights, 5 Speed, still working on small things but she is back on the road.
Since we are talking about fan shrouds I have a question. My needs replaced so I was looking this weekend at Ecklers and Dr. Rebuilds. Dr. Rebuilds book states to get the numbers from the orginal equipment if you are replacing it on a BB block. I would think a BB fan shroud on a 69 would all be the same what am I missing?

Everything else being equal, more power equals more heat the engine must shed, so an efficient cooling system is a must. It's good you're already planning on an increased efficiency radiator. Also make sure all the seals around the radiator are installed properly...they're an integral part of the cooling system as well. The radiator can only cool by having the outside air go through it...if the seals aren't in place, much of the air won't pass through the radiator, but escape around it. A properly fit shroud, fan and fan clutch help to draw the air through the radiator efficiently in sufficent amounts to cool the engine within tolerances.

I need to replace my shroud on a small block...anybody got a good supply source? Also will be needing a new Core Support...some rust at the bottom - acutually a lot...74vette

dewitts.com seems to be a good place.. everyone around here seems happy with them.. plus they have upgrade radiators, shrouds, etc..

as for radiator support.. ask dewitts.. but if not try dr rebuild..

if you really want more room.. go with electric.. dewitts has a dual spal kit.. i installed one on a 49 chevy truck that was overheating alot.. its awesome
