Last year, I rebuilt/restored my A/C entire and decided to stay with the R-12. All that I read about Freeze 12 and other substitutes was not good, Freeze 12 uses propane as one of the main ingredients..... and there seems to be a 50/50 chance that it will cause compressor failure!
I looked on Ebay and the local Craig's List and found a ton of it available. On Ebay, they require the buyer to provide proof they are certified to work on A/C.... Craig's List has/had no requirements. I posted on my Local forum (Arizona Corvette Enthusiast) and found a member who had 7 Dupont brand 12oz cans and I bought all for like $20 per can. It seems the going rate is $25 to $50 per 12oz can.
Sorry, my remaining cans are not for sell, but maybe check Craig's List online in your area, you are bound to find some there. If you have a shop service your system, make sure they put in your expensive R12 and not substitute it for the Freeze 12, which shops will use and most have on hand. Just make sure you trust your AC tech!

Good luck!

BTW: 81 toy, Good idea on insulating the evaporator, gonna wrap mine with Dynamat this weekend!Thumbs Up   Phill's Vette2010-09-03 18:58:00

OK, I got some R12, thanks to Larry.  Can someone send me step by step instructions to re-charge.  Cannot find my old notes.  I have the origianl service manual, will read, but I am sure it was written for shop workers back in 79.  When I paid someone the last time I did it he put the R12 in at the top of the dryer, there is a fitting near the larger line that goes into the evp/box.  I do not have a site glass.  Fitting near back of compressor also, goes to top of dryer, large line.  3rd fitting on small line that goes to the condensor, front of car.

May have the name of my parts mix up???
