how do you replace the heater core on a 77? thanks glenn

A shop manual is much needed here! These heater cores, I believe, had the car built around them.... Major PITA for me and my 82!!
Try to use the search function here, you should find some tips and tricks, but a Service and Assembly manual are absolutely priceless must haves!

I swapped out my motor and when that was out, I took out the A/C box on the firewall, then I had to dissassemble the glove box and passenger pillar arm to lift the dash up in order to get her out. You should consider buying the foam kit for the A/C if you have A/C because it will dissintegrate. A shop manual would definitely help you if you have one. Mine was about $90.00, but it could save you a ton of time.
If you do it, you should cosider the A/C/Heater Shut Off valves from NAPA, if you have A/C. They are 5/8, and 3/4 if I remember and about $25-30 each. It makes a difference and would be the time to do it

you will need to remove the passenger side dash pad to gain access to the heater box. From what I remember there are 5 or six screws that hold it to the firewall. You will have some hoses and cable to remove too. You will need to remove the heater hose clamps from under the vette where they go into the heater box. A manual would be handy

Suncountry is correct. There are several screws under the dash holding the heater box in place, but there is one on the fire wall under the hood that has to come off as well. It is on top of the a/c box. When you get all the hoses, ducts, cables, and screws out. The box lifts up and out. Take you time and have fun...
