Heater Shut-off valves

On the '82 the shut off valve closes when you turn the AC on. I don't know about the other years. That does not help when you are cruising with the tops off and your feet are roasting. The best thing I found is to put both valves in.  It keeps the hot water out of the heater core.  However just because you do this does not mean that some heat is not transferred to the heater core.  This is just a helps.

Also a lot of heat seems to come through the firewall from the engine.

Just putting one did not seem to help as much as the two because the heat migrates up the water in the open hose.  Two seemed to be better but it could just be me.

I close them in the spring.  You can mounted them so I could reach both of them from the top or I know one guy that did it where you have to go under the car for the lower one.

I put mine so you can get at both from the top.

The bottom one is not much trouble to get at if the engine is cool.  If it is not.  Then no way I'm going to put my hand down there to turn it off.

Part numbers for the valves at NAPA:  Sorry I forget which one is the top and which one is the bottom.  I do not even remember which is the input and output from the heater.  It was not important to me as I was putting in both of them.

As a reminder, I recall the last time we discussed the issue of cabin heat on the forum, we heard several reasons why, some of which were, carpet insulation and engine heat coming up from under the hood past the gasket nearest the windshield and going straight down the vent (incoming air ducts) under the windshield and coming out at your feet on both sides of the console under the dash. When the wife and I attended the gathering in Bend, Or. in 2010 we had driven north and spent the night at another members home (Dave aka OSSW1). Before leaving the next morning, we were discussing the heat in the car and Dave grabbed a couple of rags and stuffed them in both sides of the console vents by your feet. That was singularly the greatest relief we've had from the heat. The rags are still there today. You need to try anything and everything to make it bearable if you don't have A/C.

Jim,

I think I will try the rags first!! That could be the coupret.
I do not have the weather strip piece on the rear of the hood. Have it just never put it on.
My fresh air vents are completely open, nothing to close them off.
Gilbert, thanks for the info on the valves.
My local NAPA store has them. One at $13 , the other $19.
I'm wondering if I did put valves on, why wouldn't plain ball valves from Lowes (steam rated) work??? May be cheaper.
Thanks as always.
Joe

Size of the valves and size of the input/output is the only reason to go with the Auto Parts.

Just like Gil said, I used ball valves because I worked at a hardware store but they were just unsightly enough that I mounted them down under on the '81, out of sight. Unfortunately, after installing. I was trying them out and gave a little tug on one of the hoses and broke the weld going in to the heater core Unhappy, so I have now rerouted the hose off the pump and back to the intake. Guess I won't drive in cold or bad weather, no defroster now.Cry
BTW, the member that pointed at success with the hood gasket claimed the stock gaskets aren't long enough on the legs that go towards the front and that warm air escaped around them. He came up with his own material that continued all the way forward to the radiator mount.
If you have the time to dig into the archives there may be even more ideas. Let us know how things work out.
