3) If I'm on the right track here, does an empty heater core rot out or cause other problems?

Hey Kevin. Ah, your over complicating an easy job.LOL
All you need to do is splice in 1 or sometimes guy's put in 2 valves. Close em when ya don't want heat. Open em when ya do. I've done it to a bunch of vehicles and it works fine.

Personally I've never heard of putting a vacuum valve on the return side. I really don't think its gonna make a difference. Some guy's put manual valves on both hoses, but in my own experience, I don't think that's necessary either. Just my .02

I have decide not to re-install my lines at all, I just hope my heat core doesn't go to camp due to non-use.  I do not use the car that much in the winter and it is to hot down here anyway.   Just four more possible leaks.  System is down right now, I will buy nipple & plug kit and have on hand if I want to install the lines.

i'm kinda with kevin here.  i put the valves on my hoses and i still seem to have a lot of heat coming from the heater vents by my feet (and yes, the valves are closed Wink)
i thought maybe i had to purge the heater core also.

If you have shutoff valves in your lines it will not make any difference if you purge core as there will be no hot coolant going through it. It really is a good idea to keep coolant in the core to keep it from drying out if not used in a long period of time. As to why your still getting heat, the shutoff valves may not be closing completly or your getting hot air from outside bypassing your evaporator core.

I may try and keep some coolant in it, push it in and loop / connection one hose to each tube, thus keeping coolant in the core.
