I'm going to back flush the old coolant out and get some fresh back in. While i'm there, new radiater and heater hoses get installed.

My question is, would it be best to dump the old shut off valve and install new inline valves in both hoses or continue with a new console activated valve such as the factory installed.

I think I remember a recent post that recommends dumping the factory set-up.

Anyone got the skinny on this for a non original 78 ?Confused

Thanks....Rich

Sorry people...

I just read crossfire1982's post before mine and it addressed my question except one.

Do I eliminate the control valve completely if I go with the inline manual shutoffs ?

Thanks ...Rich

Rich,  Others may have have a different answer but I left my original factory setup in place and added the manual shutoffs in addition.

Thanks Crossfire....

.I think I might do the same. My valve looks to be 29 years old and a new replacement is around thrity dollars. I understand quality shutoffs cost around 40 dollars/pair, this may be an expensive heater upgrade. I'm planning on storing the car for 3 months in the dead of winter, soooooo I may not need too much heat from the core anyway.
Any comments. This is gonna be done within 2 weeks.

Where did you obtain your valves?

Thanks...... Rich

Yep, agree with Crossfire.  The inline shut offs are just to be able to shut your heater off completely in summer.  The problem with the heater setup in our cars is that the hot water will always be in the cabin, even with the stock valve set to off.  The stock valve never really shuts off completely unless it is brand spanking new so you will always have heat in the cabin.  The engine bay shut off valves just allow you to stop any hot water from being in the cabin.  Therefore you will need both in winter to be able to regulate your temperature.

I got mine at NAPA but I know others have obtained theirs from other sources at a cheaper price but dont have the specific information on those.  Part numbers for the valves are 3/4 inch 660-1413    5/8 inch 660-1414

I use the manual shut offs. You can get brass ball valves at any hardware store for 5-10 bucks each. They work fine, last forever and you can even place them pretty much out of sight.
