Vette(s): 73 coupe bought new in 1973 with only luggage rack, AM/FM radio, HD battery & Maplight as options. L48, 4 speed, Paint Med Met Blue 922 interior Dark saddle 418 special order. Repurchased 4/1/06 after 24 years.

Hi all, I am having a problem with my fan setup.  When I rev above 4000 rpm my belt squeals badly.  I have it quite tight and am afraid of putting too much load on the alt bearings.  I think my fan is too big, or my thermal clutch is too strong.  The fan is chrome and not OEM, but I am not sure about the clutch.  I have no cooling problems even in 100 deg Texas heat.  I measured my fan diameter and it is around 18 inches.  Does anyone know what the stock 350 fan was for a 73 without A/C.  I am debating going to a smaller fan, electric, or replacing my thermal clutch.  I am not sure what way to go.  I think a 17 inch fan would be the least expensive option.  Maybe I can find one in a local junkyard.  Any advice???

Vette(s): 1979, Targa Blue (72 Color), Pace Car rear spoiler, L88 hood, Dark blue factory interior, 525HP 406, HD 700R4, 370 gears,Steeroids, composite rear spring, TT IIs wrapped in T/A Radials.

rearn2go72 - Went with an electric fan and aluminum radiator - car woud get up into the low 200s consistently. With this set up, I have yet to break 180!! Gor for it, saves a few HP as well

jrflyboyVP2 - be careful!! That could be a water pump bearing going bad. I saw a fan come throught the hood of a 78 Corvette at the race track - symptoms were the same as yours and he assumed a non-dangerous squealing belt. Loosen the belts and check for any play, resistance or grinding in the WP shaft. Do this more easily with the pulley still on the pump.

May not be the case, but a ounce of prevention......

Thanks Paul,  I will check it out tonight, but I think my water pump is brand new!!  I guess it still could be bad though.
