Been having problems with rebuilt compressors. Went through 2 from a Corvette parts business; just went through 1 from a "classic" car air/co shop. Seems the clutch assem. doesn't work, or the compressor leaks near the clutch area. I'm getting tired of pulling this thing off and re-doing everything every couple of months.  Anybody have any ideas...Thanks ("72" model).

It used to be you could get a reman compressor and never have any problems with it. These days, that's just not the case...
I have decided that NEW is the best way to go, at least on my vehicles. I changed the one on my 'Burban 3 times in as many months before I got tired of it, and bought a new Delco compressor. It's been working great for the past 6-7 years...

The problem with reman or new for that matter is shelf life. New 72 model OE compressors have been discontinued. Not sure how long ago. So if you were to find one its hard to tell how long its been stored. A compressor as a rule should have the clutch rotated every so often to lube the moving parts inside. If its stored it should be sitting with the clutch facing down to keep the oil towards the seals. I have had new Delphi units crap out on me as well as remans. However if I have a choice I go with new. 

the A6 compressors new or rebuilt all leak oil from the front seal, its the nature of the beast, if you got the extra money go the extra mile and go with the new style Sanden -Sony setup, takes less HP, less overheating problems.

I went oem new last year and it lasted the summer, but will be replacing AGAIN as this one is now bad!! my7T1, your info may explain why.

Hmmmm Sorry to read this. My 74 has had the AC removed before I bought it. I didn't mind much living in Michigan but now I live in Tennessee and it's a wee bit hotter here. I have seen ads for insulating material. If I can stop the heat build up on my feet I might not replace the air.
What if you install a newer style compressor? What would be recommended for that?

Stopping the heat at your feet is an easy job.  you can purchase a valve from Napa and put that in the hose that will stop the hot water from being in your heater core.  Which it is even if the heater is off.  I have done this I know the part numbers are in a old post.  Let me see if I can find it. 

As far as air conditioning systems go if you need all of most of it.  There is at least one guy who belongs to this registry that been restoring corvette.  The ones he gets that are parts cars may have what you need.  I have gotten a number of things that I did not figure to ever get like t-tops for my 82 CE.
