Can anybody tell me what the correct size thermostat is for a '78 L48?
(Not sure if it'll matter or not, but it's a California car/350 auto trans).
I could swear I've seen the rating someplace, and I think it was 190, but
for the life of me I can't remember/find where! I've searched the forum,
the GM resto package info, Haynes, and every other book I've got around
and can't seem to find out if it in fact is 190 or not.
I'm going to be replacing the radiator hoses/flushing the system, and I
figure I'll change out the thermostat while I've got the system down. I
know people are running everything from 160 to 180 to 195, but so far I
don't have an overheating problem, so assuming the unit I have in there
is the OEM, I'll stick to that.
Thanks for any specs you can provide!

The thermostat should have the degree marked on it, if you want to use the same degree, Take it out and wipe it off to see the markings.
I use a 195 to get my motor to go into closed loop faster so the computer takes over, I have a 1982.
You can use about any one you want, but , I'd go for the 180.

I looked in the owner's manual for my '78...all are correct...195 degree 'stat is stock. I'd run a 180 as xfire said.
180 it is then!
Thanks guys--especially for the fast reply. I'm going shopping for more
parts tomorrow, and the new thermostat's on the list...
(also reminds me that I still need to get a reprint of the owners manual;
appreciate the prompt, Gunslinger...)

You can find plenty of reprints of your owners manual on E-Bay Motors..'manuals and literature heading'.
I know the voices aren't real, but they have some pretty cool ideas...
