1. How do I tell if I have R12 or R134a? The PO changed the evaporator core and dryer and valves 8/99, and compressor, dryer in 3/00. Can't tell from the paper work.

2. Also I bought the Interdynamics basic one can kit with pressure gauge and quick connect valve. When I tried to connect to the low side (I think I was on the right one? between the accumulator and evaporator, I think), it would not snap on tightly and sprayed freon out as I pushed. Do I have to push harder? twist? wrong fitting? |headscratch|

|smile| I believe the fittings are differant sizes on R12 & 134 systems. That may have been your problem with the freon spraying all over. |wink| |wavey|

In NJ, it's state law that they have to put sticker under the hood when the system is retro-fitted to R134. That would be a longshot to hope for that tho. If it HAS been retro'd, then there will be an "extra" or "piggyback" valve on top of the original port valves. I doubt that they would have replaced the lines & all. Even new ones would have the original size I believe anyway.

As far as the fittings, I believe if you have the R-12, the original fittings are smaller (they are on my 75). When I purchased the R134 conversion kit, the fittings were included and screwed onto the original fittings, in order for the R134 fittings to work. 134 is also very oily, more so than R12. So if you lose any of the refrigiant, when attempting to hook up, and it's very, very oily, that would be R134. R12, displaces oxygen and evaporates extremely fast. |headscratch|

Thanks for the responses. I tried the 134 kit and the fitting was too large, sprayed all over as I tried to press in. Brought her in to an AC guy and he checked her for $free$. I have R12 fittings, and it still has a full charge. I guess I should be good for awhile now.|thumb|
