Topic: Radiator Fan
in Forum: C3 Cooling and Heating Systems
Hello Guys and Gals,
First of all, I'm a new member and can't begin to express what a helpful site you have here. I have owned several corvettes over the years including a 62, 66 coupe, 67 coupe, 67 427/435hp convertible and a 73 convertible. I recently sold the 66 coupe and purchased my present vette. It's a 72 convertible with a fresh frame off restoration. The original engine came with the car but is presently powered by a 500hp, 383 stroker engine built by American Speed. In addition, it has a 200hp NOS system. It dynoed at 560hp to the rear wheels according to the specs sent by American Speed. I can say this...IT IS A THRILL TO DRIVE, even though I have never hit the nitrous. Rather than bore you further, I'll simply ask my question. The car doesn't have AC, hence a 5 blade fan is on the car. I would like to put a 7 blade fan on the car because I'm afraid I might have over-heating problems when summer gets here. Is the bolt pattern the same on a 7 blade as the 5 blade? Please excuse my mechanical ignorance. I can drive 'em but i can't fix 'em.
JimDarn, just discovered another fault....I can't add a pic either..HELP
As I was reading above about your vette, I was thinking "we gotta see some pics!"
I believe the problem with the picture is you have an extra "http" in the text.
Try editting your original message and delete the first http. Then use Preview Post to check to see if it worked.
If not, we can give you some additional help.
Good luck with the fan.

I would wait, tho, and see if there is a problem with overheating, first. As long as the cooling system is in good condition, and all the seals are on the radiator/fan shroud, it shoud be ok.(allright

How does it act now when you drive it, temp wise?
Dave is right....delete the first http//, and it will work. Here's a link to the pic
I would also suggest you resize it, first, so Norsky don't go nuts on ya!!!(just kiddin, Jim!!

Hey now! I represent that remark...!!!
Actually to make the link work using an image from your PHP all you need is /member_pages/8301_8400/8356/cut.jpg or from your PFF all you need is /member_uploads/8301_8400/8356/Jims_72_droptop.jpg.
btw - Jim, I setup your forum profile so a clickable image will appear in your signature on your next post.

Thanks for the help guys. Now i can continue bidding on the 7 blade fan on Ebay.
Adam, Everything on the cooling system is new...aluminum radiator and water pump. The problem is, there is no fan shroud on the car. I haven't had any heating problems on the highway or even around town but while driving in the Christmas parade the temperature did go to 210 degrees. If it hit 210 in the Christmas parade, what's it gonna do in the fourth of July parade when the temp is about 50 degrees higher? Do you think the 7 blade fan will help any?
David, Bladenboro is about 35 miles southeast of Fayetteville. It's where all the poor folks in NC live.
Thanks for the compliments on the car guys. As for posting pics, I'm gonna have to rely on my wife for help. She's a computer programmer...I can barely logon.

The 7 blade fan will help quite a bit.....that's why they put them on the A/C cars. You still need some way to direct the air thru the radiator, not around it. Find a shroud before you find the maximum temp it will run before puking!!

You will need that shroud like Adam's Apple recommends. At low speed you rely on the fan to pull cool air in from in front of the radiator. With out the shroud and seals, your fan will pull hot engine compartment air in from the sides and not through the radiator. Path of least resistance (the radiator fins will restrict air flow some what). So for the most part the fan just moves air around in the engine compartment.
Will the 7 blade move more air. I can't answer that with out looking the fan curves for both. There is several variables like number of blades 5 or 7 as you stated, but also diameter and pitch. To some extent is the blade shape which will effect efficiency.
You have one fine looking vette and welcome to the forum.
