Vette(s): 1968 Conv, 454HO,500HP-600TQ, TKO-600,3:70 HD rear,hotrod air, custom paint & suspension,1973 Ruby Red,T-top, 383 Stroker, TK)-500,frame off restro, 1967 Dodge Coronet, 340 stroker to 406, Dana 60

I had a 5 blade on mine when I got it & switched to a 7 blade & it made a difference. Then I put on a flex fan which seems to cool better at idle, but over all just about the same as a 7 blade. But the shroud part like mentioned above is a must. I also put in a 16" Spal puller & 2-7" spals behind the frt tires to pull the air out of the engine compartment...this helped keep the temp down in traffic. Lower your antifreeze ratio to 30/70 antifreeze/water & add water wetter...that will get you 10-20 degrees cooler. HP makes heat & there's no way of getting around the problem except taking all the necessary steps to help keep it cool. I'm running 500hp & 600tq & until I took the above measures I could not drive in traffic without overheating. Great looking car & welcome

Alan

OK guys, it's official. I just told my wife to forget the breast augmentation...we gotta have a fan shroud. Is that putting your priorities in order or just proof that a "cool" vette is better than hot sex?

I got my 7 blade fan today but I'm having trouble locating a fan shroud. It seems that the '72 SB model,W/out air and automatic trans  is an oddball. Neither Mid America, Baileys, Corvette Central, Eckler's, Zip Products or Rik's have this particular shroud.

Another question....Why wouldn't the shroud for a 72 BB work, or even a SB with air? Since i'm running the 383 stroker, I need all the air I can get. I'm afraid to order anything until you guys can tell me exactly what will work with my particular application.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Jim, have you tried Paragon Corvette? They have tons of stuff, new/used/repro...They also have a "Vintage" selection, and the people who know what's what. I bet they could set you up, or at least give you an idea on what will work for your application. Check out the "NOS/Used parts", upper right of page. Worth a shot.

Adam, just checked....

PR #: 3938943U GM #: 3938493
Fan shroud, metal. N.O.S. Use w/1968-72 base engine 327-350 cars w/o A/C,
w/aluminum radiator, and 4 speed. They do not have the 2 small welded on, lower attaching straps.

This is what i'm seeing from the suppliers that even have the shroud. Why would a 4 speed car carry a different shroud than my automatic?

Only explaination I can think of would have to do with the cooler lines from the trans to the radiator tank. Possibly the shroud is shaped differently in this area. I don't see that it would not fit, tho. Might call and talk to a tech/resto guru there, or shoot them an e-mail. They'll have the answer, I promise!

Thanks Adam. I contacted a guy today who restores corvettes and he has promised to have me a shroud on the car before the summer gets here. I'm gonna go ahead and put the 7 blade fan on the car to see if that helps at all....can't hurt. Doesn't really matter at the moment.....it's 21 degrees here tonight.
