Was wondering if my 72 was supposed to have an over flow tank. If so does anyone have any pics or better yet one for sale! If not I am assuming the over flow hose just comes down the side of the radiator?
Thanks
Rodney

Hmmm....not 100% certain, but I think surge/overflow tanks were used only on particular engine options. For instance, a big block would have the surge tank, but the base engine, small block did not....again, not absolutely sure. I can check when I get home later, if no-one else has the info...
Seems like the raditator withOUT a cap used the surge tanks, and the raditator WITH a cap did not, but don't quote me on that....

On my 74, the cap (small block) the cap has arrows to allow the overflow to go out thrugh a vent tube................with the arrows aligned in the direction of flow. It appears that both engines were done the same way in regard to the radiator.

Ya, but the earlier cars were different. Starting in '73, they all had the plastic overflow on the fenderwell. I gotta check my "Fact Book" later and see about the engine option/surge/no surge....

If your radytater has a cap, and the tube, then I would go ahead and get a puke tank for it...that way, if it does happen to spit(and it will, eventually), it won't cause a problem, and blow coolant all over da engine. Also, it will allow any pukage to be recovered, and siphoned back into the radytater...which is the whole purpose in da firstest place. Big smile

I have a 72 and no surge tank, from what I understand is because I have an automatic w/air they use a bigger radiator and no surge tank. If you look in the assembly man. the diagram and part numbers are at the very back under big block.

Vette(s): 1972 conv, 4-speed, 350, 200hp, numbers match, rally wheels, war bonnett yellow w/white top. good condition, nice driver.
I have a convertable w/air small block base engine. From my study and questions, they did not have a tank. Mine is also a 4 speed. I THINK it has something to do with the BASE, Convertable issue. I do not have a windshield washer tank either. It is a bag that goes under the fender on the drivers side. There are little hooks for it to hang on. It is welded to the firewall reinforcement. Whoops, OFF TOPIC!

Here be da scoop on puke tanks...
'71-'72, all small blocks = NO tank...overflow hose runs down the backside of da radytater.
'71-'72 all big blocks had the recovery tank.

Like Joel says, nope no puke tank. There is usually a fill line stamped in the rad tank. You need to keep your juice about 3" below filler to keep from puking out coolant. If you add an after market tank you need to keep the stuff right to the top of filler neck, and will need a cap designed for overflow system. Stant #10231."T"
