There's always something....

this time i've got a broken spade connector on the A/C compressor. Don't know how similar these are across the years, but mine has a live and an earth connector, plugged onto the compressor down between the main body and the pulley. The live pin has broken off, right at the base. I could get to it and solder it back on, if i could get the pulley off....
I've undone the nut at the centre of the pulley, but everything's stuck tight on there - don't want to go wading in with the hub-puller or a six foot lever bar until I know whether that's the right way to do it...
Does anyone know where i can see assembly/teardown instructions on the web, or has anyone had their compressor clutch off like this? Until i find out, i want to tread carefully and i'd like to sort it without discharging the system - i can't see how removing the pulley would necessitate that, but i may be wrong!
Any help would be much appreciated, specially in time for summer (yeah ok, british summer - but i just don't like things not working!)
|headscratch|

I think the '80's compressors are similar to the earlier models. It's been a few years, but I'll give it a try.

Look in the "hole" where you removed the center nut. The inside of the pulley assembly should be threaded. You can buy a GM A/C clutch puller at most parts stores. It screws into the pulley, then there is a "bolt" in the center of the puller that pushes against the shaft of the compressor. One you move it a bit, The clutch part of the pulley will will just slide off. You can then unbolt the coil and remove it from the compressor.

The pulley assembly sits on a tapered shaft with a key-way. If you tried to pull with a gear puller on the belts, it will damage the bearings in the clutch.

Good luck,

Martin, thanks for the lightning response!

You're onto something here, the centre of the pulley does indeed have a thread inside it - it looks like i'll have to get hold of the puller. My only concern is, given the relatively small amount of british GM cars equipped with A/C in the early 80's, i may have trouble finding a puller for that vintage of compressor, in our parts shops. Still, now you've outlined the method, i can't see why it should be any trouble to make a puller up, with a bit of threaded pipe, some nuts and threaded bar. If i do go down that route, i'll let you all know my design. (You've got me thinking already!)
This will have to be a weekend project.... |headscratch|

BTW, Martin, that's a fine looking motor you've got there!
Cheers...
