I would like to know which way is the best to keep cool a 427 BB?

Fan with stock shroud? Or

Electric fan???

I do not want to buy a shroud only to find out it wont do the trick.

Any input is appreciated.

Just my opinion, but I think the stock setup should work just fine providing all the pieces are in place: radiator seals, shroud, air dam, hood seals. That is also assuming the radiator is clean and well cared for both inside and out. The only disadvantage of the stock setup is the horsepower used to run the fan.

I have a 454, Dewitts Rad/dual fans no shroud, car runs steady @ 200 degrees max.

Went to an electric fan on my 79. Dropped temps significantly... Also threw on a set of March underdrive pulleys at the same time to take better advandage of the HP savings...

I have a fairly high HP engine in my car and of course have had some heating problems.  I've  used both standard fans and electric fans,  however with the new engine which has a dry sump, I had to switch to electric fans.  They cool fine.  However, the biggest temp drop I got was by doing away with the by-pass hose.Take the thermostat and drilling two 1/8 in. holes in the flang.  This causes a much larger quanity of water to circulate through the radiator and  it cools the car better.  I use a 160 thermo and stay at 180 or less.

You can see the March Pulleys I used on their website. Don't have a good pic in the car, but you'll get the idea. Just different diameter pulleys that rob less HP to run components...

I can't say how well a 16" fan will work with your motor, although I have seen plenty of BBs with electric fans...

A 16" fan by it self will not cool a BB. Hp makes heat & the more you have the harder it is to cool . A shroud is a must on a BB, I use a 17" flex fan with a 16" spal ( 2700cfm) as a back up in case I'm caught in traffic, I also use 2-7" spal's behind the frt wheels to help get the hot air out of the engine more efficently. I was stuck in traffic this weekend for over 30 minutes 92 degrees out & those fans kept the temp at 180 degrees...even ran the air once and awhile to keep my feet from melting. A strandard 7 blade clutch fan should work as good or better than the flex..I just kept the flex on because I like the look better. Adding water wetter & reducing your antifreeze ration to about 25% in the summer will help to keep your temp 10-20 degreesd cooler. Straight water cools the best , but it's not good for preventing corrosion.
