On the passenger side of the engine compartment below the air conditioning unit is a valve that has a 1 inch hose running to it that comes off the block and on top of the valve a vacuum line connection.  The vacuum line that connects to this got burnt off when it touched the header and I cannot for the life of me figure out where this connects and to what it connects to on the opposite end - can you help?  If any of you have a 1980 build book and can point me to the page that has the answer that would be great.  Thanks

It sounds like you are describing the vacuum operated hot water valve that goes to the heater. Does the valve have a hose running out the bottom of the valve to the heater core?  If so the vacuum hose you describe should be a very small hard vacuum line.  On my 82 it runs  across the firewall to a rubber gromet which is almost behind the distributor.  There are 3 vacuum lines that run out of that gromet.  The vacuum line passes through the firewall to the heater controls  under the dash behind the glove box.  If this does not sound like the same valve, a pic would be very helpful.Crossfire19822009-06-19 19:01:05

That's the one, it's the only one over there. It closes the hot water going to the heater when you turn on the A/C.

Eureka - as you described I found that where the three vacuum lines were coming out of the firewall one of those lines had been melted and sealed itself shut about a foot down the line, I will get some new hose and splice what I have into there (being careful this time to keep the line away from those headers) - thanks to all for your help - this one really was tripping me up.  Ken
