Can anyone tell me where the VIN location would be on a 70 or 71? Window Pillar? Door Jamb? Door?
Also would the VIN number on the block be on the front left/right or rear left/right?
I ask because I have been seeing what should be this beautiful Vette sitting in the weather at this self storage place here for 2 years now. I found out it has been there in the weather since 1996. I never paid much attention to it because it is probably melting of rust.
I had some time today to get a much closer look and realized it had the massive hood. I popped the hood and low and behold it was a massive 454, in tact. I checked the stamp on the rear taillight and it was marked 70. I got home and looked it up in the The Ultimate Encyclopedia of the Corvette and it looks exactly like the LS 6 on pgs 202 and 203.
What is something like that worth needing total frame off work and if in excellent condition?
Thanks for any answers,

I don't have the original engine in mine, so can't help there. You can find the VIN on the dash. It's also stamped on the frame - on the left rear around the top of the hump. The transmission also has the VIN stamped on it. There may be other locations that I can't remember after a couple glasses of wine...others will chime in shortly.

The VIN plate should be mounted to the top of the instrument panel, visible through the windshield, or the windshield post. Either location should be visible from the outside of the car due to Federal law.
Starting in '72 the VIN contains an engine code for what engine the car came equipped with.
The stamp on the taillight lens doesn't necessarily give you the year of the car. The same lens could be used for several model years, or could have been replaced.
Any big block, if it's factory original can be worth bucks...in most cases more than an equivalent condition small block. There are exceptions, but that's a general rule.

The VIN will be on the driver side windersheild pillar on all Sharks.
To find the VIN/Engine suffix code, look HERE.
If in fact it is an LS-6, it would be worth untold millions(not really, but close!
)...the LS-6 was only installed in 188 'Vettes, and only in '71. Even needing a total restoration, if it is a real LS-6 car, it could be worth $50-$60,000, to the right person.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm going back next week to dig a little more.
