I just replaced the water pump, I have already replaced the a thermostat, radiator cap, all fluid, top radiator hose, and all drive belts but its still running near 200 is that normal? The new themostat is rated for 165 and it is the second one that I have put in. Did that before realizing water pump was bad in an effort to stop high temps. Bloody auto parts store did not have a bottom line with a sping in it so I was not able to replace that. Will that have an adverse impact?

My 78 runs 200 - 210, I've been told that is normal for our vetts.

I noticed the fan was also considerably stronger after the switch than before.

Will, did'nt a member just go thru this a month ago. I know they tried a few stats before they got a good one.

http://www.c3vr.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=73866 Looks like it ended up being an air bubble in the system.
good luck.

Some of the "later" Sharks do run a bit hotter. 200deg wouldn't be out of the ordinary, depending on ambient temps, and A/C-no A/C.
My '74 has never run over 180(according to the gauge), even in 100 temps with the A/C on.
I wouldn't be too concerned if your '78 ran at 200(well, that didn't come out right, but you know what I mean, eh?)
You might want to use an infrared thermometer to see what the actual temp is...it might not actually be that hot. Shark gauges ain't the most accurate to start with...
If it ain't puking when you stop, or get stuck in traffic, I'd have to say it's prolly otay.

Temp climbs a bit higher when stuck in traffic.... but that is all the time up here. Today was the first drive since the switch. I am hopein that itll get down a bit lower.

Regarding the air bubble in the system the ebo spoke of.  I remember seeing posts about drilling a small hole in the new stat before install to allow air to escape and eliminate that problem.  Id love to see a pic of exactly where to drill the thermostat.  Im thinking of replacing mine with the type that stays open when it fails instead of closed when it fails.

I also say 200 is not a problem William. Normal is 195, so 5 deg. ain't that much higher. Personally I'm a firm believer of , iffin it ain't broke don't be messin wid it.Smile

Oh, and by the way. You and I have the same last name. Maybe we're related?

My 72 350 automatic has run at 210 for the past 71000 miles and 35 years regardless of ambient temp, A/C working, or traffic.  I just assumed that was normal.  I'm with Terry, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it".Wink

Or maybe it is broke.  Is 210 too hot??  Am I shortening the engine life?  Joel?  Anybody??
