   Hello,

I decided after having the trailing arms already removed from the car to remove the crossmember and differential removed also.  I decided to have new doughnuts installed and the differential rebuilt by Bair's in Linesville, Pa as well as the trailing arms and halfshafts.

As stated in another post, I needed the Harbor Freight 4 Ton Hydraulic Ram to pry apart the crossmember from its perch.  All other methods proved useless.  I highly recommend this tool for this purpose.

   With Regards,
   Mike C

Squirrels had used the crossmember to store corn and nuts and all the stuff fell out when crossmember was separated from the differential!!

Good job Mike, now is the time to do it with the trailing arms out and you're certainly making it look easy !! While your cleaning up the differential case, look for casting dates on the case halves to validate your diff. One is on the drivers side just behind the input shaft. The other is on the cover, very close to the full/drain plug. Let us know what you find,

Hello!

Prior to taking the differential to Bair's I was able to garner the stamping at the bottom of the case. I did not look at the casting numbers before dropping off at the shop. At the disassembly at Bair's the Tech was able to confirm the ring and pinion numbers matched the build date of my car.  More comforting news on my part.

Great pictures on that link!  Valuable information to all.

The stamped code on the bottom of the differential case matched the ratio of the ring and pinion inside the case. 3:55 ratio. Dates on ring and pinion match the case dates.

Thanks,
Mike C
